A Brief History

Kruger was originally established as a protected area in 1898 and officially became a national park in 1926. Since then, it has become one of Africa’s leading wildlife reserves, drawing nature lovers and conservationists from around the world.

Modern-Day Kruger

The park is now part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, linking protected areas in South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. With well-maintained infrastructure, abundant wildlife, and a wide range of ecosystems, Kruger offers something for every visitor.

Lower Sabie Rest Camp

Wildlife Hotspot Along the Sabie River

Lower Sabie is one of Kruger’s top safari regions, set beside the Sabie River where wildlife gathers daily. Visitors can expect regular sightings of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and leopards, especially around Sunset Dam. The surrounding open plains and riverine trees attract a variety of game and birdlife. This area is a favourite for photographers, with excellent game drive routes like the predator-rich H4-1.

Satara Rest Camp

Prime Territory for Lion & Cheetah Sightings

Satara is known as Kruger’s “Big Cat Central,” located in the open grasslands of the park’s central region. It’s one of the best places to see lions, cheetahs, and leopards, especially near the S100 dirt road. The area supports large herds of impala, zebra, and wildebeest, making it a magnet for predators. Expect great game viewing and sweeping savanna views ideal for photography.

Shingwedzi Rest Camp

Northern Kruger’s Scenic Safari Destination

Shingwedzi offers a quieter safari experience in the northern section of the park, where fewer vehicles mean more peaceful wildlife sightings. Located along the Shingwedzi River, the camp is known for excellent elephant encounters and rare antelope species like nyala and Sharpe’s grysbok. Birders flock here for specials like Pel’s fishing owl and Kingfishers. Scenic river loops and mopane bush add to the region’s wild charm.
